Manta Storm in Maldives

One and only world's conservation area in Maldives

9/4/2025

One of the world’s most famous hotspots for manta rays and whale sharks is located in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Hanifaru Bay. Thanks to seasonal plankton-rich currents, the bay becomes a natural feeding ground that attracts hundreds of graceful mantas and the gentle giantnwhale shark around the area.

From May to November, Hanifaru Bay transforms into a spectacular underwater ballet: dozens, sometimes hundreds, of manta rays swirl gracefully around snorkelers, while whale sharks may glide past in search of their feast. This phenomenon makes Hanifaru Bay one of the few places on earth where you can witness such a breathtaking congregation of marine life.

To preserve this ecological treasure, scuba diving is prohibited in Hanifaru Bay. Only snorkeling is allowed while guided by a certified local guide, giving visitors the chance to experience the magic up close while minimizing disturbance to the animals.
